Camping in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s many wilderness areas and national parks provide perfect opportunities to set up camping sites. Gone are the days where you take hours to pitch a tent with very little room in time to survive the night. Sri Lanka Day Tours has teamed up with Mahoora Luxury Camps to give you something special.

Mahoora provides many camping sites in Sri Lanka, and each of these camping sites provides you adventure, either in the form of jeep safaris, nature trails, bird watching tours, or other fun activities. In terms of tents, you will be hard pressed to find camping tents in Sri Lanka or any other country that exceed the standard provided. Safari camping in Sri Lanka comes with many perks: the hospitality that is provided is unmatched, as you will be provided freshly prepared food and beverages, luxury tents with comfortable mattresses and even flushable toilets, and many other little things you don’t expect to get in the middle of a wilderness area.

More than anything else, camping provides the best base for safari adventures, as you are right there in nature itself, and you only need to go a short distance to the centre of the action. Sometimes the campsites themselves get visits from wandering animals and birds, which creates excitement at the campsites. The stories you hear around the campfire of adventures had by naturalists and the experience of dining at night under a canopy of a million stars are experiences you cannot get anywhere else.

I would highly recommend Sri Lanka day tours for the half day safari they arranged in Kaudulla Park. It made our trip in Sri Lanka. The kept excellent communication with me both via email and whatsapp to arrange dates, cost and timings for pick ups. The driver for our safari was very well experienced for getting us safely around the park, and what's more, seemed to chose the best route for the drive starting with Eagles, then lone elephants, to a small family of elephants (the youngest being a 2 week old elephant) to the grand finale of approximately 150 wild elephants grouped together. Phenomenal experience and memory for my first safari. Top marks.

First time visiting Sri Lanka and doing a safari. Very glad we could spend a night at the mahoora campsite. Staff could not have been more helpful and kind. Every dish was another piece of art. We had the full experience, during the early safari we spotted 2 leopards, lovely colorful birds like the green bee eater and many more! Our naturalist Avinka taught us more about the plants and animals in the park. The night walk was also a big succes with snakes and the sleepy lizard was very cute. The tent was more than I expected. Very clean and roomy. The real live gecko was a nice surprise.

We were at the camp for 02 nights and the experience was amazing! The tents were very comfortable and erected in a way not to disturb the natural surroundings. Sri Lankan food served was delicious though i would have liked a raw salad with the vegetarian meal which we had before visiting Kataragama. All staff were very courteous and friendly and more than wiling to make our stay a memorable one.Safari tour was equally exiting and we saw lots of animals including a leopard! Hats off to Manjula, Wasantha and Osha for the wonderful 02 days which we will never forget!

Although Mahoora Tented Safaris are very expensive, we have choosen the Kumana Explorer programme by Mahoora, since we had already a great experience with them in Wilpattu NP two years ago. And I must say, this trip was worth it. 10 people were taking care of us two (a naturalist, a driver, a park ranger, a cook, and many more). The tent was very comfortable, even with flushing toilet and shower, the camp was located at the bank of a river in the midst of the park. we had an evening safari, where we sighted two leopards and one sloth bear, a good number of elephants and plenty of birds, kites and eagles. Also during the morning safari we were lucky to spot another sloth bear, as well as the very rare black necked storch. This was only possible, as the camp was in the park, and if you are starting from the entrance gate, you need 1,5 hours to reach the sites, where you have better chances to spot such animals. Also the food provided was excellent.

This is the 1st camping experience of us and we are well impressed. We stayed one night and it had become one of the most memorable one. We were taken in the company jeep for campsite from the entrance. Campsite was something new and fresh. It was set by the riverbank.
There was a comprehensive reservoir which was dotted with many small islands. It was home to an incredible diversity of birds species. It’s an ideal spot for bird enthusiasts. We had a boat safari and it was something new whereas usually we find jeep safaris. We managed to spot giant elephants, deer, sloth bears, crocodiles and wild bores. An interesting event was we found elephants swimming along those mini islands and they have made those islands as their residence.
There was 6 Campsite staff. Everyone was friendly. Cooked some tasty Sri Lankan cuisine. At the same time they were much careful of our safety.
The park was rich in flora and fauna. It was at its best with its grassy lands, wilderness, small islands, and hills and valleys.
Definitely this was one of the best of our holiday and worth every penny.
