Tour in brief

Our mask making center is located in Kandy, which is well-known for its mask making industry. You will meet your Sri Lankan representative near the Temple of The Tooth Relic in Kandy. Our experienced guide will walk you through the entire mask making process. The location consists of a mask museum, a mask making workshop, and a mask showroom.
You can observe the various techniques of mask creation using traditional and sustainable resources such as recycled paper, treacle, cinnamon, clay, broken tiles, beeswax and even cow dung. Masks are deeply connected to Sri Lankan folklore, and takes on a functional role where they are used in healing rituals known popularly as devil dances. Their past is rooted in ancient beliefs and the ideology that they have healing and protective powers.
All masks have been patiently hand carved with very intricate designs and painted in vibrant colours which depicts the traditional inheritance. The timber should always be light and durable, therefore trees such as “Rukkattana” and “Diyakanduru” are used.
Nowadays, in Sri Lanka, masks are used in dramatic adaptations, dance performances, various rituals and also to cure sicknesses. There are different types of mask categories that are used in Sri Lanka which includes Raksha Mask, Sanni Mask, Kolam Mask. The craft of mask making has been perfected over the years and craftsmen have been able to provide new and improved designs when compared to the ones that were found in ancient Sri Lanka.
